Engaging in Creative Activities can be a Form of Self-Expression and Self-Care

Never give up on the things that make you smile

Engaging in creativity is a beautiful form of self-expression and self-care, as it allows individuals to communicate their inner thoughts, emotions, and experiences in a unique and personal way. Whether through art, writing, music, cooking, baking, or doing anything creative, it's like taking a break for your mind, helping you release stress and feel better.

I know that sometimes it can be hard to find the time or motivation to allow yourself to indulge in a creative  hobby (or any type for that matter). However, it is important to maintain a good balance between every day life, and your spare time. Especially in such a heavy tech world we live in today, avoiding the constant scrolling of your phone or laptop will have a positive impact on your wellbeing (trust me on this one).

Here are 10 examples of creative activities that can help with self-expression and self-care:

1. Painting or Drawing
Express yourself through colours and shapes on canvas or paper. You don't have to be an artist; just let your imagination flow.

2. Journaling
Write down your thoughts, feelings, and reflections in a journal. It's a therapeutic way to process emotions and gain clarity.

3. Photography
Capture moments that inspire you or simply document the beauty around you. Photography allows you to see the world from a different perspective.

4. Cooking or Baking
Get creative in the kitchen by trying out new recipes or experimenting with ingredients. Cooking can be a mindful activity that nourishes both your body and soul.

5. DIY Crafts
Explore your crafty side by making handmade gifts, decorations, or personal projects. Crafting allows you to express your creativity while creating something tangible.

6. Music and Singing
Play an instrument, sing along to your favorite songs, or create your own music. Music has a powerful effect on mood and can be a form of emotional release.

7. Dancing
Let loose and dance to your favourite tunes, whether it's in your living room or at a dance class. Movement and rhythm can lift your spirits and energise your body.

8. Gardening
Connect with nature by tending to plants, flowers, or herbs in your garden. Gardening is not only therapeutic but also allows you to witness the beauty of growth and renewal.

9. Art Journaling
Create a visual diary using drawings, paintings, stickers, washi tape, collages, and more, to express your thoughts and feelings. It's a therapeutic way to document your life and reflect on your emotions, and is a visually stimulating way to express yourself.

10. Creative Writing
Write poetry, short stories, or even start a journal. Creative writing allows you to explore your imagination and emotions while improving your writing skills.

As a gentle reminder, you do not have to be a professional when it comes to taking on creative hobbies. Sometimes, the best part is learning as you go. And if you find yourself starting a new hobby, not liking it, then wanting to start a different one, then that is OK, too. Allow yourself to indulge in creative hobbies, and let go of the guilt that often comes along with it.

Take care,

Tamarin.
